Cathy McCormack lives in Glasgow, U.K., in one of Europe’s largest post-war working-class housing schemes (Greater Easterhouse) which the media still regard as being among one of the poorest and most deprived communities in Britain.
Cathy is a long-term campaigner on poverty, housing, health and climate-change and her writings and broadcast have received international acclaim. Cathy is also widely known in Britain as a social commentator for the people and an inspiring speaker. Her biography, The Wee Yellow Butterfly which was published in 2009, is local-global story providing a critical analysis of the world war against the poor and working classes that was waged under Thatcher, New Labour and American administrations. A social, economic, and propaganda war where the rich and powerful do everything in their power to promote their own welfare regardless of how many people they make poor, hurt or kill in the process. A ‘war without bullets’ which is being fought with briefcases instead of guns and has intensified under our coalition government whose social and economic policies are now killing more people than tanks or bombs. Cathy has also worked with Professor David Fryer for over a quarter of a century to expose this war, drawing on their different experiences, expertise and frames of reference to provide different understandings and solutions to this war and the epidemic levels of misery, morbidity and mortality afflicting communities in Scotland and around the world.
David is currently Head of Research at the Australian Institute of Psychology, Brisbane, Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Queensland, Professor Extraordinarius at the University of South Africa, and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Stirling.
